<p>Gabriel Michael Reyes, 22, of Batavia, died at 1:20 p.m. March 4, 2024 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City as a result of injuries sustained in a vehicle accident.<br></p><p>He was born January 26, 2002 in Ottumwa to Dustin Joseph and Faith Renee Light Reyes.</p><p>A 2020 graduate of Cardinal High School, he participated in baseball and basketball, but especially excelled at football and track, having raced at the state track meet. During high school he had worked for Binns &amp; Stevens Explosives in Oskaloosa “blowing up stuff”. Gabe served 2 years with the US Army, stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY. He was an equipment operator at Douds Stone and currently was working at Winger Mechanical in Ottumwa.</p><p>Gabe was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Ottumwa. He was a member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local #33. He loved being with his friends and especially loved to be outdoors, fishing, shooting guns, riding side-by-sides and 4-wheelers. Gabe loved all kinds of music.</p><p>He especially loved his family and always told his family and friends, “love you” at the end of any conversation.</p><p>Surviving are his parents, Dustin and Faith Reyes of Batavia; 2 sisters, Whitney Engle (Dalton Burnstedt) of Floris and Lexi Engle (Kyle Woodard) of Ottumwa; he was known as “Funkle Gabe” to his 2 nephews, Oliver and Arthur Burnstedt; his grandparents, Sherry (Steve) Jipp of Richland and Debra Wharton of Eldon; aunts and uncles, Lisa Hayes, Jack Hayes III, Dana (Gary) Evans, Ronnie (Brandie) Light, Kristen Light (Jason Haynes) and Christian Jipp; and also is survived by many cousins, great-aunts, great-uncles and extended family.</p><p>He was preceded in death by grandfathers, Joseph Reyes and Roger Light; and step-grandfather, Jedd Wharton.</p><p>Visitation will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 10th at Reece Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.</p><p>Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, March 11th at Living Hope Bible Church in Eldon with Pastor Mark Clark officiating. Burial will be in Floris Cemetery with military honors.</p><p>Memorials may be made to Gabe’s parents for the Underground Barbell Gym.</p><p><br></p>
