Mr. Murphy L. Johnson, Sr., 81, of Gay and formerly of Moreland, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2024, at his home.


Mr. Johnson was born October 27, 1942, in Newnan, son of the late Dewey Levoit Johnson and the late Nettie Murphy Johnson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Seabees and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. A resident of Moreland most of his life, he retired from General Motors, after being employed at the Lakewood and Doraville Assembly Plants and then the Delco Division in Albany. He was a member of Moreland First Baptist Church.


Survivors include his wife, Sandra C. Johnson of Gay; sons and daughters in-law, Lee and Tiffany Johnson of Luthersville, Matthew and Maegan Johnson of Talking Rock; stepson and his wife, Larry and Lera Alford of Marietta; grandchildren, Hunter Johnson, Brent Johnson, Kourtney and Devon Avett; great-grandchildren, Colten, Brantley, Gracelynn, Oaklynn, and Seely. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Turner Johnson; granddaughter, Lilah Johnson; step-son, Jonathan Alford; and his sister, Sylvia Cochran.


The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 2, at First Baptist Church of Moreland. The Reverend Todd Slade will officiate and interment will be in Southview Cemetery in Moreland.


The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 1.
