George Bennett Vann Obituary
George Bennett Vann, age 93, of Woodstock Georgia passed Wednesday,
January 25, 2017. Mr. Vann was born on July 13, 1923 in Murfreesboro,
North Carolina to the late parents William Quinton Vann and Essie Mae
Vann. George was a World War II Veteran, Prisoner of War and member of
the First Baptist of Woodstock. He was a devoted husband, father,
grandfather, and great-grand-father who enjoyed his Church, spending time
with family and his many friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Ruth
(Reese) Vann, married to George March 3, 1946.
He is survived by his children, Larry (Kathy) Vann and Linda (Gordon)
Curren; grandchildren Vicky (Keith) Paul, Jennifer (Michael) Guglielmetti and Jonathan (Robyn) Curren; great-grandchildren Luke Paul, Libby Paul, William and Tyler Guglielmetti and Miles Curren.
George served 1943 - 1945 during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He was assigned to the 724th Squadron, 451st Bomb Group, 49th Wing,
15th Air Force U.S. Army Air Corps. Location of Service: Miami Beach,
Florida; Pueblo, Colorado; Kingman, Arizona; Foggia, Italy; Greensboro,
North Carolina. George was a tail gunner on a B-24J heavy bomber and
was shot down October 13, 1944 over Vienna, Austria. He was captured
one day later and became a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft IV in Northern
Poland and was a survivor of the 500 mile, 57 day forced Death March to
allude the Russian Army. He was liberated in April 1945 by the U.S. Army.
George retired from Sears after 38 years of a successful sales career. He
was well known for his ability to exceed customer expectations.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at the First Baptist Of Woodstock Chapel with the Rev. Ken Smith officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service in the chapel on Tuesday from 12:00 p.m. until the funeral hour. Interment will follow in the Georgia National Cemetery.
